for avi video, use gspot

for a dvd can you not jst right click-> properties in your player?

or lend it to someone who has a dvd player tht gives the bitrate as its playing

either way

bit rates are averages, so i wouldnt take too much notice of it

although generally you would say the higher the better

it depends on the level of motion on the screen ie

a two minute scene from sleepless in seattle

vs

a two minute car chase in gone in 60 seconds

the first could have a much lower bit rate and be indistinguishable in quality
