What apps do you need for this?

I've got a lot of different answers before, but none sound like the proper method.. Routes I've tried: DVD Shrink, DVD Lab Pro and TMPGEnc.

Just say I've got 3 full discs and I want to compress them so they'll fit almost exactly on 1 single-layer DVD-R. Are you supposed to XviD them first? Or is there another method?

you need a programme called dvd2one

try here

www.doom9.org

but the quality will be lost, do NOT divx them first
cos you'll lose even more quality

with the above programme you can specify the size of the files you want, so you'll have to get your calculator out!!!

i found it took quite a while.. the problem with dvd shrink is that it has an ultimate limit, and will not compress beyond a certain threshold (that includes compressing the compressed files, believe me i tried)

have u tried nero?? it allows you to customize the outputs by size, it may work, but the huy who wrote the compression engine also wrote dvd shrink!!!

give it a go

You get different answers because there are various methods of doing this. As rowly says, you will lose quality. I would suggest keeping them as seperate discs as traders might not be too happy getting a copy of the compressed disc (if that is what you are going to introduce into the trading pool of course).

Thanks for the info Rowly, I'll check out DVD2One ;)

I'm not going to merge music DVDs ;)

So, what size do you have to put in? I've done the process twice now and they've both came out as 4.50GB.

With films, do you think I'll have to crop the frame (sides) to keep the file sizes down? The picture is pretty blocky with the full frame :(

There is 1 way to do it thats very easy.

If you use clonedvd2, what that does is reads the size of the dvd files, and then clones it to a dvd no matter what the size is.

So you can get a dual layered DVD onto a normal DVD with this program. Used to use it all the time when I was copying films from Blockbuster :):) Quite fast too

I'll look into CloneDVD, but isn't that just a ripper like DVD Shrink?
Will it be able to compress to a third of a 4.37GB disc?
