View Full Version : Big Changes @ bootleg.org.uk

I am thinking about getting a dedicated server for this site, as the traffic I am getting is just more and more each day.

What I would be running in the dedicated server would be an FTP also, 1 that didnt go offline. If it was offline then the site would be down also.

But the speeds would be very good, as I would have a very high bandwidth limit, and also I would be able to dish out bandwidth to people with different levels of accounts.

The only problem with this is, I may need to charge people for this service, as I wouldnt be able to afford it out of my own pocket. I am not talking Hundreds of Pounds, but a couple of quid per month for all wanting to use it.

On the FTP I will have a fair bit of space, so I will Be uploading VOB files for DVD's, mpg's of vids for those without DVD burners, and also lossless formats (flac, ape, shn)

There will also be an mp3 section, and a section for those that cant pay, which will be pretty much a upload 1 item, download 1 item. So it will be limited to stop leachers. Obviously those with better accounts, will be given better access. And I aint looking for more money for better accounts or anything, or trying to rip people off. This cash will be purely for server costs. Any extra's i.e. donations or what ever will allow for the servers to be upgraded and allow for more accounts, more bandwidth, and keeping the FTP to have great speeds.

This would also mean I would be looking for more moderators on the forums, and mabye another admin.

I am also thinking of taking the main site away, and changing it into a proper bootleg site, and not just my listing of music, with a proper bootleg site, it would be people posting news about new sources of things, info about any and every bootleg.

I wouldnt stop trading, I would just move my list to http://watson.bootleg.org.uk or something.

I would like to have everyone opinion on this, so I sent out a mass email to all of the forum users too.

Cheers

Sounds good , could turn out to be the best boots site on the web?.

It's kind of silly. FTP server is just software on an machine. YOu are already paying for internet conncetivity. If people will pay great but I probally would not. There are tons of "Jam Band" ftp servers that operate for free, it is sometimes hard to get in but it is free.

Chris, the problem is not access and software - it's bandwidth. Internet providers only allow users to use a certain amount of bandwidth per month, and everything else costs extra. Running an FTP server uses tons and tons of bandwidth, especially if people are downloading a lot.

If the selection of boots is good, and the user cap isn't too low, I think I'd be up for it.

One question: would this eliminate the need to gain reputation points before being allowed to download? (Says the person making his first post.)

I'd certainly be willing to pay a monthly fee in exchange for a good service.

Watson, any idea how soon your planning on making these changes?

I haven't downloaded anything yet (need some reputation enhancements...hint!) but I wouldn't be opposed to such a thing.

yeah, thats my point, hard to get on. I use quite a few free FTP's, and I was lucky enough to get on a great Oasis FTP when I started collecting boots, with no limit for myself, this guy ran it from his own computer, but had some setup, and you got a good speed constant if not too many users were online. The more people here that contibute, the better the speed will be. But it will be set up so that stuff does have to be uploaded also, Especially for the free accounts

yeah mate, rating system would be obselite(spelling) and I would provide free accounts for people to upload and download.

But for things like DVD files, and shn/flac/ape stuff it would be direct to the paid accounts, as it would be there bandwidth that they have paid for.

Watson, any idea how soon your planning on making these changes?

I am in talks with them the now, seeing what they can setup for me, and how my access would work out. And see what sort of pakcage I will get. But I think they need to install a new HDD and server box or summit for me, but hopefully next week some time get the ball rolling. Then I will start ripping some of my CD's and uploading them.

I am also thinking of a bittorent tracker. But thats just a thought in my head the now, as I have no idea what to do with that :D

Cheers for comments, and replys folks

Well it sounds like a good idea...

Biggest issue is that its hard to collect money from members when it comes to msgboards. I've seen it time and time again. Besides FTP maybe a private DC hub for those who do "invest" in being part of one. I'd still keep the board free as it works well that way....

my two cents

Sounds like a good idea to make a greatsite. I'm a bit stuffed personally as I use the broadband at work, which has a bloody great big firewall - so ftp is no good for me.

Maybe have to sort my life out and get a decent internet connection at home ! this might be the kick I need.

cheers

Yeah thats true mate.

But people dont pay, they dont get access. I spose I may be out of pocket for a few months, but I dont mind, if I am getting summit out of it, with people putting stuff on ftp.

On The DC hub, I just don tthink they get enough activity. And the speed/slots etc, cause its p2p.

But the FTP wont actually be hosted with me, so I will need to upload/download like everyone else, which is how the good speed will be kept. Obviously the better the account type, the better access, and more freedom of bandwidth you will have

it's probably a good idea but what about the fan that can't pay u ... i mean like ppl like me form bulgaria that can't pay anything on internet ... and don't have any credit cards ?

Watson
23-07-2004, 11:41
I dunno what would happen with things like that yet zic.

Most people will prolly want to pay via paypal, I could do it via bank transfer, cheque, postal order, or even cash aswell I suppose.

But if people just aint able to pay, then there will be some free accounts available

I'ts a brilliant idea!!

The Scientist
23-07-2004, 15:35
Are we definitely talking about paying for FTP access or is it msgboard usage as well? Myself I'd rather want the messageboard access but if I have to pay for that I'll probably want to be able to download some video for my money (increasing your bandwidth where i normally wouldn't). Any clarification on whether you are needing help with FTP, messageboard, or both costs would be appreciated....

Watson

Message Boards will always be up and running. Thats no problem, I dont mind paying for that out of my own pocket anyway.

But The Cash will mostly go to the FTP, The boards will still be able to be accessed all the time

This is a briliant idea...
I will definitely pay a few pounds for this service...
In all due respect, there are other free FTP's with various bootlegs, so there may be more competition for users...

Here in South Africa, i have the best possible internet access... It's Telkom ADSL 512kbps, the only problem is that i have a 3GB cap
I ahve almost used my entire monthly cap downloading bootlegs, and im wondering if anyone has a program or knows any program to overrun ADSL caps..?!?!?!

Watson: i hope to see this happening, keep it up
:P

Not sure how you would get round a cap on what you download :(

Yeah big difference in my FTP would be that it wouldnt go down mate, and IP would be same, with good speeds constantly

Excellent idea! You can count on me for a few bills and definitelty anything material from my lists that strike an interest.

I'm not sure what a bit torrent tracker entails either (assume it's only used to exchange IP addresses amongst the software), but here's a thought... Would it not be better (if possible) to use the server space to host torrent material. The server would incur some bandwidth usage from the initial upload from the seeder and then some more as the actual seeding out occurs. As others jump on to download and start seeding themselves, the bandwidth usage of the server should reduce.

Watson

Could mabye use some of it for that yeah. But was wanting to do a Static FTP, so that people could always get the good speeds.

But if FTP does well, then I spose bittorents will need to be the next big thing for the site
