I live in NJ and recorded a Bush concert at MSG a few years back. It was my very first taping, and I actually used this bulky cassette player and these mini tapes. Once you get past security, they pretty much don't bother you. I just kept an eye out for any security that was lurking around.

99.9 % sure they DO NOT ALLOW taping of any kind at any MSG gig. Might be exceptions for a very few... Phish, DMB.

However, like almost all gig ever recorded in the USA, they are done by sneaking your gear in and trying to keep it stealthy during the show.

There are various levels of everything, from:
1) Security check at the door (don't know MSG, but many large 15,000+ seat arenas do metal detector wands)
2) Massive security in venue always looking for tapers/pot smokers/drunkards
3) Some venues have hired help in street clothes that blend in the crowd and try to bust people
4) Idoit do gooders that tell security on you
5) Other things...

According to Jesouhaite you might not have any problems with MSG, but just beware it only takes one Dirty Harry security guy looking for a promotion to rain all over your parade.
