Here is a Quick easy guide on how to make a simple dvd menu in TMPGenc DVD Author.

1. Load up DVD Author, and click on Create New Project

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/1.jpg

2. Next Click on Add DVD Video (or if your files are on the HDD then select add file)

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/2.jpg

3. Now Select the folder you are wanting to put on the dvd, this is the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD you

have in your DVD drive (or have downloaded)

4. A New window will now appear once you have selected the desired folder(this may take a few seconds depending

on the speed of your computer/drive)

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/3.jpg

5. It has giver me several tracks to add to DVD author, as I know track 1 will be the main gig, due to its

length, I will add this one 1st

6. On the next screen it will give you option settings, Reading chapter info should already be ticked, if not,

tick it (this will read any chapters that are premade on the dvd)

7. Now tick the Copy files to HDD, this will increase the speed if your working direct from a dvd

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/4.jpg

8. Click OK

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/5.jpg

9. Go make yerself a cup of tea, cause it can sometimes take a wee while

10. A New screen will now appear, just click ok, and we can go back into this screen in a minute.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/6.jpg

11. If you had more than 1 file you would like to add (i.e. your extras on the DVD) then follow steps 2-10 again for each of the files. If not then follow the next step

12. Click on the edit button as shown in the Image below

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/7.jpg

This will bring up a familiar screen again

13. Click on the Chapter Cut Edit tab at the top of the screen, and this will bring up the following screen

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/8.jpg

Down the Right hand side is where the start of your chapters will begin (I usually try and do it for the start of a song)

And along the bottom is where you will select your chapters

14. Now the easiest way I find to get to the start of the next song is to watch it in a program (dvd author, WMP, etc) and then find a screen that you will recognise easily at the end of a song. And then scroll the scroll bar on the DVD Author, where you select your chapters, slide this along to the position you want for your chapter.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/9.jpg

you will see in i) that the Colour of that frame is Red, this means that it is ok to put in a chapter here.

In ii) you will see that the slider has moved along, this is what you will use to choose chapters (and the play rewind fastforward buttons)

Next you will click iii) and this will create your new chapter. Remember, that this is the 2nd chapter, so it will be the 2nd song on the DVD.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/10.jpg

You should now have 2 Chapters. Repeat this process till you get all of the chapters you need

15. Once you have added all you chapters click on ok

16. Now click on the Create Menu Tab, and you can now have some fun heh

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/11.jpg

17. Here you will change the layout, and the images of the actual menu you create. It is probably best to fool around in here, to do things.

Clicking on the Edit Menu Theme will allow you into change the graphics and such to how you want it.

This is limited in how you can customize it, but go ahead and put in your background, choose your fonts, name the title, name you tracklistings.

18. Next you want to move everything about and have it how you want it to look.

19. Once you have everything in place, and how you want it, click on the Menu Display Settings tab at the top

And then click on the motion menu tab. If you want to use a motion menu highlight which parts you would like to use, what this will do, is in the tracklistings, and main page part, if you have your tracklistings as thumbnails, then they will be animated showing a small part of the video. Do not make this too big, as it will take up a lot of the dvd size.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/12.jpg

20. Now click on the general tab, and choose what you want to display, most of the time I do a Main menu and tracklisting, as thats what I created. And I display main menu on 1st play, and track after track.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/13.jpg

All of these settings can be set before you begin if you want

21. Click ok

22. Click ok to confirm your menu settings

23. Next Click on Output, and then Click on Begin Output.

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/14.jpg

Your dvd will now start to author, this may take a while

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/15.jpg

Congratulations your DVD is now ready to be Burnt onto a DVD.

Here are some Screen shots of my final Product

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/main_menu1.jpg

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/main_menu2.jpg

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/main_menu3.jpg

As you can see its an animated menu, with the different frame shots

And here is the tracklisting menu I done

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/tracklisting1.jpg

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/tracklisting2.jpg

http://www.bootleg.org.uk/images/guides/dvdauthor/tracklisting3.jpg

Again you can see the different frames for the tracklistings, again I used an animated menu for this.

This gig is Oasis Live at the Gurten Festival, Switzerland, 19th July 2002

www.suprnova.org if you know how to use bittorrents, if not just catch me on MSN later on mate, adn I will send you it, just off for some CS the now.

Also my next menu for Gmex that I am doing will have Music in the background, and a slide show for the background screen (if I do it right heh)

Then that will be all 3 ready for our trade Chris, though it will prolly take some time mate what with moving and shit :D

can you make dvd's using mpeg's?

Watson
19-10-2004, 16:36
yes you can, though its mpg2 format, but its not advised to change mpg's into DVD files, cause traders can easily spot it, and it looses alot of quality. Some people try and fob off mpg sourced dvd's as proper dvd's, but whatever you get the format of them in keep them that way, if its mpg then just make a VCD, much easier and less hassle with the converting and stuff.

If its for films though, and you want more than 1 on a dvd its a good idea

Eggbury
19-10-2004, 22:49
does a vcd work with dvd players or are they just better for the comp?

whatever
19-10-2004, 22:51
if your dvd player can run vcd's then it will work
most new dvd players play them

Eggbury
21-10-2004, 00:50
is there any progs that do the same job as the dvd author except for vcd's?

Watson
21-10-2004, 09:20
best program is just mpg>vcd there are quite a few of them on www.suprnova.org as bittorrents

The Keygen generates a crackm starting with 'TD10', the DVD author version that I downloaded from http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tda.html starts with 'TD16' so te crack doesn't work. Does anybody have a valid crack-code for me please?

Watson!
Thanks a lot for the guide, I have looked it over for ages but never gave it a try until last week and its totally excellent, really fast and easy to author, first disk took me a few hours after I made various little errors but then once I had it figured the latest DVD with a more complex menu format took just an hour start to finish and looks excellent. Its certainly worth taking time to think about a project before starting and taking the time to do a song selection, all my mates were well impressed, so thanks again.

Not a problem mate. Another good thing you can do is add extras.

make up an mpg file with pictures and music in it, and have that as yer background. this gets you a tune playing in yer main menu, with soem background pics. Not figured out how to make the mpg yet, cause I aint done a dvd for ages. But will need to start soon for all me tv stuff I spose :)

Ahhh..Music on the menu.. Thats the only thing I could not figure out how to do, wondering how to do it was driving me mental but now I think if I use VideoStudio 6 (Bought new boxed for a fiver on Ebay) I can make up an Mpeg with that, will be checking it out over the weekend since I have four days off work for Easter. Thanks again!

can you make dvd's using mpeg's?

I use a wee program called "ISO Buster" its dead simple then you can author the files to DVD with TMPGenc DVD author, I am only using it cos I have a few music VCDs that I cannot locate on DVD.

SCOUTTHEDOGGIE
06-05-2005, 16:20
Gave up trying to get music on the menus the way I was told, so I am gonna buy Tmpgenc 1.6 and the AC-3 plug in encoder, yes I did say buy. The Keygens work but I decided just to buy the real deal and the AC-3 plug in will help with editing, hopefully this will allow music on the menu as well. If it does I will tell you right away.

Thanks but I am having more of a problem with the DVD author, downloaded five keygens last night alone and only one worked, three had a stack of virus problems and then the other that had worked started to stop letting me open files but it told me this in something that looked like ancient Greek. So when I checked out the prices its only £47 for the two which is Ok I guess.

Can you use avi or vob files when you are authoring a dvd????

Assuming that you do it in TMPGenc DVD Author:
* vob files you can add: Source setup -> Add file or Add DVD video
* avi files have to be converted to mpg
